Frequently Asked Questions
1. How much does it cost to bring a group?
Entry to the Museum and the underground tour is free. We have a range of free and chargeable education activities; please see the education programme for more details.
2. How much time will it take to look around the Museum?
Most schools spend the day with us, arriving at approximately 10am and leaving at approximately 2.30pm. We would recommend that you allow this amount of time to ensure the students see as much of the site as possible.
3. How long does the underground tour take?
The tour usually lasts 1 hour 20 minutes, including time for collecting and depositing hard hats and cap lamps.
4. Is there a limit on the size of the group I can bring?
The maximum number of people in a school party is 300 (including adults).
5. How many adults do I need to bring?
If you are going on an underground tour, you will need 2 adults for every 17 pupils.
If you are not going underground, you will need 1 adult for every 10 pupils.
6. Can I bring pupils with special educational needs?
Yes, in general every effort will be made to include students with special educational or medical needs. Any special requirements of students should be taken into account at the planning stage and indicated on your booking form.
7. What should pupils wear?
As the Museum is part of an outside industrial site, pupils should wear warm clothing and sturdy footwear. Due to the nature of the site, clothing and footwear can get dirty.
8. Is there a lunch space available?
A picnic area is available for packed lunches, weather permitting. There is also an indoor shared space where pupils can eat their lunches, which will be allocated to you on arrival.
9. Is there a place for storing bags?
Lockable cupboards are available for coats and bags in the shared lunch area. However, space is limited, so if possible please leave belongings on the coach. Please be aware that the Museum cannot take any responsibility for items left in the cupboards.
10. Can you help with risk assessments?
The Museum has created a risk assessment advice document and a health and safety advice document to aid you in completing your own risk assessment.
