Interactives at Hope Pit
Many of the new projects at the Museum have the collections at their heart. As well as the day-to-day work of recording, researching, conserving and displaying the collections, we aim to raise funds for specific and often time-limited projects. At present, we are working on two major project areas:
Making Sense of Mining
New work underground, involving several departments working together to provide essential repairs to the historic underground workings, enliven the existing displays and provide new areas to discover in unexplored roadways. One important aspect of this work is the conservation of the historic furnace shaft, currently inaccessible to the public. The mining and curatorial staff will be developing ideas on how the new areas will look, and are hoping to complete this work in 2011 if funding allows. The Museum would like to thank the following organisations for their support of this project:
Collecting Cultures: Seeing the Whole Picture
Seeing the Whole Picture is an exciting new project supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund through its Collecting Cultures scheme. Grants given over a period of four years will help the Museum to add new art and photographic works to its collections. The project will also enable us to continue working with present-day and former coalfield communities to discover more about coal mining’s rich heritage.
