What will you do during the next school holiday?
Every school holiday the education team at the National Coal Mining Museum for England runs fun, FREE activities for families. From art and craft activities, such as making pit-pony sock puppets to building balloon powered coal carts, our workshops can be enjoyed by the whole family!
Activities usually have a coal mining theme, focus on a part of the Museum site or relate to the current Special Exhibition. Please click here to see the current special exhibition
The FREE workshops usually take place on weekday afternoons, and are timed to coincide with the local school holidays. Also, look out for weekend family activities linked to events such as National Science and Engineering Week, Big Draw or National Storytelling Week.

In addition to these fun-filled workshops, during most holidays you will also get the chance to meet some of the Museum’s coal-mining characters, such as Mrs. Lockwood, the 1940s miner’s wife, or Fred Glover, the Pithead Baths’ attendant. On certain days, you may also get the chance to see inside Hope Store, the Museum’s Hope store where many of the larger machines are kept and meet some of the curators.
