Rockin’ events this September at the National Coal Mining Museum for England
15/09/2009
The National Coal Mining Museum for England is holding a number of events at the end of September. On 26 September the Yorkshire Geology Society has coordinated a special day of geology activities with the Museum entitled ‘Rock and Coal’. And on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27, the Museum will be holding a dry-stone walling course.
‘Rock and Coal’ is a free event and gives visitors the chance to examine and handle a range of rock and mineral specimens. This activity is suitable for people of all ages. Enthusiasts are invited to bring along their own fossils and specimens for comment and identification by a team of geological specialists. A very exciting offer indeed is that a limited number of walks will be available done the Museum’s drift – the inclined roadway that runs down to the underground. Normally access to the drift is limited to specialist groups and the public are not usually allowed into the drift. So this is a really rare opportunity to experience something very different.
The two-day dry-stone walling course teaches you the basic principles of dry-stone walling, which will involve taking down a derelict or damaged section of wall and rebuilding it to a satisfactory standard; led by accredited DSWA instructors and members of the Dry-Stone Walling Association of Great Britain
The cost for the two-day course is £75, including lunch; the course runs from 9.30am until 4.00pm, each day. Although lunch is provided, you may want to bring hot or cold drinks and snacks for the occasional mini- break.
For more information or to book your place on the dry-stone walling course please call the Museum on 01924 848806.
