Santa is on his way to the National Coal Mining Museum for England

Santa and a little girl 20/11/2009 Visit Santa and his reindeer friend’s 140 metres underground as Santa returns to his special underground grotto. Booking is essential for all Santa underground tours.

A unique opportunity to meet Santa awaits families visiting the National Coal Mining Museum for England. Due to popular demand, Santa has returned to Wakefield and will be resident in his underground grotto every Saturday and Sunday from 21 November and then every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11 December, with extra dates from Monday 21 to Wednesday 23 December.

Santa said “It’s great to be coming back to my underground grotto. It is always such a magical place. I have loaded up my sack with plenty of presents for all the children who come to meet me.”

Families can travel 140 metres underground to meet Santa Claus. All children will be given a present and grownups may even get treat, a delicious mince pie. The whole experience is sure to delight everyone who visits. There will be a special Santa letterbox on the surface, so don’t forget to bring your letters for Santa, you may even get a reply back.

To add to the festive atmosphere, various festive activities will be taking place throughout December, including performances from the Grange Moor Brass Band and free festive art and craft activities in the Learning Curve, (all on selected dates).

Santa's Reindeer Hunt is back. Santa has lost one of his reindeer at the Museum and he wants you and your family to help him find it. Follow the clues around the Museum site to find the letters that make the name of the missing reindeer. This is a great family activity for everyone to enjoy. You can purchase a sheet of clues for £1.00 from Reception. (Subject to availability).

This year visitors will be in for a special treat as the Yorkshire Philharmonic Choir will be performing Christmas carols underground on Sunday 6, 13 and 20 December, between 2.00pm and 4.00pm.

To complete the visit, there are unusual gift ideas in the souvenir shop, warm and festive food in the café and a chance to enjoy the winter scenery.
The Museum is a great place to keep kids occupied during the school holidays. There are a whole host of hands-on exhibitions for inquisitive minds, a gallery exploring life as a child during Victorian times and don’t forget to pay a visit to the pit ponies.
