Picture This! February Half Term activities

Miners and pit ponies in Durham during the 60s Copyright John Bulmer 08/02/2010 With so much to do this February half-term, families are spoilt for choice. Visitors will be able to enjoy free art and craft activities and storytelling sessions inspired by the current special exhibition ‘Northern Soul, John Bulmer’s images of life and Times in the 1960s’.

There are free family activities running weekdays, 1.00pm to 4.00pm, in the Learning Curve. ‘Make and Take’ fabulous picture frames to display your favourite photographs.

Wander into the special exhibition where our storytellers will bring characters to life and take you on a journey down memory lane to the North in the 1960s. Also Maurice the Miner will be at the Museum welcoming visitors.

Having enjoyed a hearty meal in the café, you can stroll up to Hope Pit (or take the train, (weather permitting), a fascinating colliery complex focusing on the science of mining and crammed with fun interactive tools. Why not visit Hope Store on Tuesday 16 or Thursday 18 February, and take a look at the Museum’s large object collection.

Experience travelling 140 metres down one of Britain’s oldest mines, accompanied by an ex-miner. Don a hard hat and lamp and you are ready to go underground. Please remember under-fives are not allowed underground, but we do have an excellent under-fives play area.

There is so much to do at the National Coal Mining Museum this half term, so make sure you pay a visit!
