This is a BJD Anderton Shearer. In 1952 James Anderton coupled a plough to a rotary drum cutter. The plough helped push coal onto an armoured conveyor with very successful results. The NCB recognised the widespread application of the first shearer loader, licensing the initial designs to both Anderson Boyes and BJD to develop.
This variation of a fixed drum shearer by British Jeffrey Diamond is very similar to the chain undercutters except that the chain race has been replaced by a shearer drum. This particular example has been put together slightly oddly in that it has haulage equipment at one end for rope haulage and that for chain haulage at the other.
