The Stephenson lamp, perhaps better known as the Geordie lamp, is similar in design to the Davy. Both Davy and Stephenson were working toward the creation of a safe lamp in 1815. Both found that flame could not pass through the small apertures in fine gauze or tubes and incorporated that fact into their designs.
