This printed etching by Richard Samuel Chattock (1825-1906) shows a horse gin at an unnamed pit. A horse gin was an early form of winding system that would use a horse to power a winch which would raise and lower miners in to shallow worked mines.
This print may have been one of sixteen etchings which were reproduced in the book ‘Illustrative of Scenes in the Coal and Iron District of South Staffordshire’ by Chattock, London and Birmingham (1878).
