A black and white image showing a miner standing by a notice which reads ‘THIS COLLIERY IS NOW MANAGED BY THE NATIONAL COAL BOARD ON BEHALF OF THE PEOPLE. JANUARY 1947.’ These notices were put up when the pits were nationalised on 1st January 1947. This day was known as Vesting Day.
Harold White was commissioned by the NCB to photograph coal mines and their mining communities across Great Britain between 1950 and 1960. These images were donated by the late photographer’s daughter. The collection includes images from England, Scotland and Wales as it was thought that such an important collection should remain together.
