Flame-Safety Lamp

Early Davy lamps could be dangerous in strong air currents where there was a risk of the flame blowing out or even blowing through the gauze. Jack Davy lamps protected the flame by surrounding the lower half of the gauze with a glass cylinder. They were used in the north of England from 1850.
