Flame-Safety Lamp

In 1886 Andrew Howat patented an arrangement where air entered the lamp through holes below the bonnet and was directed upwards by a short shield around the gauze and then deflected through the gauze.

This Deflector system protected against strong air currents outside, creating a more controlled flow within the lamp, which would give stronger illuminating power.
