Please note that we have temporarily paused our iconic Underground Tours until April 2025, to install a brand new winding engine. The Museum remains open with a brand-new Time Tunnel experience now bookable.
The check system showed who was underground at any time, both in case of emergencies and as an early form of
work record. They were also used by miners as tokens to collect their lamp or pay.
