Knifeboard-manriding Carriage

Subject
Transport and Communication

A miner’s working place might be kilometres from the shaft. Before manriding haulage or locos pulling carriages, miners might have had to walk two to three hours to reach the coal. Miner’s walking at the start and end of their shift wasted time and money. An alternative was needed. Initially miners would ride in empty coal tubs but later custom-made carriages were designed.
