A digital photograph taken on the day the last shift was worked at Kellingley Colliery, North Yorkshire. The image shows a group of miners at the end of their shift with Chris McConnachie at the front. Mr McConnachie was a member of the rescue team at Kellingley, having started his career as a face worker

Production ended at Kellingley Colliery on the 18th December 2015, 50 years after coal was first brought to the surface in 1965. Around 450 miners lost their jobs. Kellingley Colliery, known as the Big K, was the largest deep pit in Europe, at it’s peak it employed over 2000 miners.
