This oil painting depicts a seated girl holding a shovel. The artist, Hannah Keen (1873-1899) was the daughter of James Keen, Chairman of Wigan Coal and Iron Company and the owners of Maypole Colliery.
The girl is wearing a head scarf, white shirt, heavy mine working trousers, apron and clogs, typical clothes for a pit-brow lass. In the background is a headstock with mining buildings and workmen on the path.
