Pit Profiles were a feature in the National Coal Board’s monthly publication, Coal magazine. The artist was commissioned by the NCB to visit different collieries to draw and talk to miners across the coalfields. The resulting images and interviews appeared in Coal.

This image of shows miner Fred Ruddock and his Profile appeared in the May edition of Coal magazine in 1949.
