Underground Tours (Jan-Mar 2025)
25 November 2024
An update on our Underground Tours:
We are set to temporarily pause our famous Underground Tours, from Sunday 29 December until April 2025, to install a brand new winding engine which allows us to take visitors 140 metres underground.
Our current winder, which powers a cage descending into the 230-year old coal mine, will be replaced with a new winder during the early part of 2025. This means our Underground Tours will be paused from Sunday, 29 December and are expected to reopen in April 2025.
But don’t worry! Our Underground Tours will be open for the remainder of this year so why not come and experience it before the closure. Santa has also arrived to make the mine a magical grotto from Saturday, 23 November.
It’s really important that we undertake this essential work to preserve the important history of mining and for visitors to be able to experience it in such a unique way.
During the closure of the underground experience in early 2025, there will still be plenty to do at the Museum, including the launch of an exciting new immersive digital experience in January 2025. We can’t wait to tell you more about this soon!
There will also be a new behind-the-scenes overground colliery tour, new exhibitions, and events and all the usual fun including play area, horsekeeper talks, spotlight talks, fun family activities, a fantastic café, and much more.
We would like to thank everyone for their support during this time and we can wait to welcome you now and in the future.
